Board of Directors

We are so very fortunate to have a dedicated group of local parents volunteering their time as our Board of Directors.

Emily King
Emily King- President
serving since 2007

emily@swapnplay.org

Emily brings over 15 years of experience in community service and education to the Swapnplay Board of Directors. With a B.S from Lewis and Clark College and a MEd from Portland State, she has dedicated her professional and personal time to helping children and their families be their best selves. Starting with a VISTA volunteer job in neighborhood improvement in the 90’s, leading to child welfare at the Public Defender, then on to elementary education teaching 4th and 5th graders, and most recently tutoring at an after school program for at risk children and struggling students.  At home are a husband, three young children, and the family’s whippet dog. For fun, she likes to help people find things hidden in plain sight, put shoes on small feet, with some sewing, reading, running, and preserving on the side.

Krista Soto – Member at Large
Serving since 2016

krista@swapnplay.org

Krista Soto lives in St. Johns with her husband Zack, son Caspian, mother in law Donna and their three pets- Estelle, Rufus, and Dooey. When she’s not at home desperately trying to declutter their house, she’s selling eyeglasses, singing in a ten piece disco band, crafting up something in the workroom, or getting messy in the kitchen. She loves to help build community and to support SwapnPlay in being a safe and inspiring play space that’s accessible to all families.

kristi

Kristi Wright – Member at Large
Serving since 2016

kristi@swapnplay.org

Kristi Wright brings to the Board years of experience in childhood education.  She is a stay at home mom for the moment, but has enjoyed teaching both 2nd and 4th grades.  The fact that she has former students who are now in college baffles her.  She is currently struggling with the “Preschool or Not to Preschool” question for her 3 year old.  Her and her husband moved to Portland 3 years ago from Niagara Falls, Ontario.  Her husband, Michael, is Canadian and her son, Caius, is a dual citizen.  She enjoys traveling, hiking, sewing, making lists, and organizing her Facebook group for moms where she schedules daily events for Portland moms to participate in with their littles.

Megan Schubel – Secretary
Serving since 2016

secretary@swapnplay.og

Even though Megan has worked or lived in St. Johns for over 15 years, it wasn’t until the birth of her daughter Anna in 2014 that she truly began to feel connected to the St. Johns community, in large part due to St. Johns Swapnplay and the connections she has made there. Megan brings over 10 years of experience in education and community service to the Swapnplay community. For eight years she taught 4th and 5th grade in the David Douglas School District and has spent many years volunteering in youth mentoring and education programs in Oregon and her native state of Indiana. In their free time Megan and her husband Brian enjoy introducing daughter Anna to cross country skiing, skiing untracked powder in the mountains, biking, hiking and cooking.

rebekah

Rebekah Courpet – Member at Large
Serving since 2016

rebekah@swapnplay.org

Rebekah and her family left Los Angeles last December and moved to St. Johns. It was here, and by-in-large through Swap N Play, that Rebekah found the community she’d been searching for since becoming a mother. Her genuine sense of volunteerism led her apply to the Board of Directors. Giving back to the community that has already given her so much brings a joy to Rebekah’s life that she never wants to lose. Currently, Rebekah works part-time at Cathedral Eye Care. The rest of the time, she is with her amazing daughter Mara and wonderful husband Austen.

Joseph Hessney – Treasurer
Serving since 2016

treasurer@swapnplay.org

Joe has lived in St. Johns for the last ten years with his wife Rebecca. He brings knowledge of education and the community from his 7 years of  experience teaching at a school for at-risk teenagers, many of whom were from North Portland. He also volunteered at Roosevelt High School’s library for a number of years. In 2013, Joe and Rebecca adopted their son John in an open adoption with one of Joe’s former students. Now he spends more time than ever in St Johns as a full time dad, and has also gotten to know many of the community’s youngest residents at Swapnplay as well as neighborhood parks, preschools, and events. On a sunny day you’ll probably see him kicking, throwing, or hitting a ball with John, or trying to keep up with him as they ride bikes through the neighborhood.
