Board of Directors

We are so very fortunate to have a dedicated group of local parents volunteering their time as our Board of Directors.

Chelsea Brendtro – President
Serving since 2016

Chelsea and her husband grew up in North Portland and met at Roosevelt High School in the late ’90s.  They lived downtown through their 20s while Chelsea was teaching preschool at Helen Gordon Child Development Center by day and working on her masters in Early Childhood Education at night.  They’ve been back in St. Johns since 2010.  Chelsea has been a radical homemaker and part-time nanny since her son was one.  She is a long-time vegan and animal lover with a dog, two cats, and two rats at home.  She enjoys hiking, reading sci-fi, and putting together her wardrobe from free piles and naked lady parties.

Krista Soto – Member at Large
Serving since 2016

Krista Soto lives in St. Johns with her husband Zack, son Caspian, mother in law Donna and their three pets- Estelle, Rufus, and Dooey. When she’s not at home desperately trying to declutter their house, she’s selling eyeglasses, singing in a ten piece disco band, crafting up something in the workroom, or getting messy in the kitchen. She loves to help build community and to support SwapnPlay in being a safe and inspiring play space that’s accessible to all families.

Megan Schubel – Secretary
Serving since 2016

Even though Megan has worked or lived in St. Johns for over 15 years, it wasn’t until the birth of her daughter Anna in 2014 that she truly began to feel connected to the St. Johns community, in large part due to St. Johns Swapnplay and the connections she has made there. Megan brings over 10 years of experience in education and community service to the Swapnplay community. For eight years she taught 4th and 5th grade in the David Douglas School District and has spent many years volunteering in youth mentoring and education programs in Oregon and her native state of Indiana. In their free time Megan and her husband Brian enjoy introducing daughter Anna to cross country skiing, skiing untracked powder in the mountains, biking, hiking and cooking.

Rebekah Courpet – Member at Large
Serving since 2016

Rebekah and her family left Los Angeles last December and moved to St. Johns. It was here, and by-in-large through Swap N Play, that Rebekah found the community she’d been searching for since becoming a mother. Her genuine sense of volunteerism led her apply to the Board of Directors. Giving back to the community that has already given her so much brings a joy to Rebekah’s life that she never wants to lose. Currently, Rebekah works part-time at Cathedral Eye Care. The rest of the time, she is with her amazing daughter Mara and wonderful husband Austen.

Joseph Hessney – Treasurer
Serving since 2016

Joe has lived in St. Johns for the last ten years with his wife Rebecca. He brings knowledge of education and the community from his 7 years of  experience teaching at a school for at-risk teenagers, many of whom were from North Portland. He also volunteered at Roosevelt High School’s library for a number of years. In 2013, Joe and Rebecca adopted their son John in an open adoption with one of Joe’s former students. Now he spends more time than ever in St Johns as a full time dad, and has also gotten to know many of the community’s youngest residents at Swapnplay as well as neighborhood parks, preschools, and events. On a sunny day you’ll probably see him kicking, throwing, or hitting a ball with John, or trying to keep up with him as they ride bikes through the neighborhood.

Jorge Rodriguez – Member at Large
Serving since 2017

Jorge and his wife Katie moved to St. John’s in 2014.  Jorge was born in Chiapas, Mexico, and moved to Tulsa, Oklahoma when he was sixteen.  While growing up in Tulsa, Jorge had a profound impact on his community.  His passion for art and dance provided an avenue for him to empower his community, while educating those around him on different backgrounds, cultures, and ideologies.  He dedicated his time and talent to organizing various art programs that were accessible to all children.  Jorge and Katie welcomed their daughter Amelia in December 2015.  As a parent, Jorge hopes to continue his passion for art and empowering communities by creating new artistic outlets for everyone.

Dyvisha Gordon – Member at Large
Serving since 2017

Dyvisha Gordon is a native of Portland and is a long-time resident of the St. Johns neighborhood. She currently lives in her family home with her mother, Cindra; her sister, Ameerah, her son, Omari; and her pet—also known as “the man of the house”—Ringleader. She is passionate about reproductive justice, social justice, public health, and centers much of her volunteerism around equity and inclusion. When she is not chasing her little moon-child, she is working full-time as a housing professional. Her hobbies include cooking, biking, hiking, camping, reading, and exploring the many hidden gems of her hometown. She believes the families are the foundation of the community and appreciates the spaces, like Swapnplay, that centers the needs of the family.

Mariel Grimord-Isham – Member at Large
Serving since 2017

Mariel Grimord-Isham, born in Ann Arbor, Michigan, has been a Portlander circa 2003. She is mom to Gareth and Gabriel and wife of Adam Grimord-Isham. She and Adam came here to be closer to nature and part of an underground music community. Mariel is interested in gardening, sustainability, and food and climate justice, and loves trying new recipes and experimenting with baking. She has a license in clinical social work and has worked in community mental health for the past six years. She got her start in this career as a grassroots community organizer in South side Chicago years ago. She values community centers and projects like St Johns Swapnplay because of how it brings people together in a world that often feels distant and disconnected. She can always be found being silly and goofy with her family and practicing ways to let go and enjoy living.

Adam Thomas Grimord-Isham – Member at Large
Serving since 2017

Adam has been living in Portland, Oregon since 2003 with his wife and life partner Mariel, after growing up in Michigan and living several other places throughout the country, mostly in the north and northeast parts of Portland. After several years of college, non profit work, and performing in local bands (and helping to organize shows and tours), he has become a stay at home dad for his two sons Gareth and Gabriel while Mariel works. It’s really the best “job” he’s ever had, if only it was more valued by our society. Adam’s interests are writing (runs a weekly writing group), music (listening not making it anymore), environmental and social justice, community, and reading. He hopes to bring these interests and experiences to the community at Swapnplay.
